It’s your car’s way of saying, “I’ve lost load on the circuit.” And that means something’s broken—or missing.

Most of the time, it’s a bulb. But don’t just swap it and walk away. I’ve seen techs do that, only to have the same car back a week later with the same issue. Corrosion in the socket, a bad ground, or a failing flasher can look exactly like a dead bulb. And if you’ve installed LED bulbs without load resistors? That’s not an upgrade—that’s a guaranteed trip to hyper flash city. If your hazards work but your turn signals don’t, that’s usually the flasher relay or fuse. Solid-state relays don’t have moving parts, but they’re not bulletproof. On 2018–2021 Toyota Camrys, I’ve replaced half a dozen BCMs because the internal flasher circuit failed—traceable to a cracked solder joint near the relay driver. And yes, a loose connector at the relay can mimic a dead module. Always check the easy stuff first.

Here’s one you don’t hear often: LED bulbs without load resistors don’t just cause hyper flashing—they can confuse the BCM. Some vehicles will log lamp-out codes, disable the circuit, or even trigger a warning on the dash. CANbus systems are picky. If you’re upgrading, use CANbus-compatible LEDs or install 6-ohm load resistors across each bulb. It’s not optional.

If you replaced the relay, test hazards too. They often share the same module. On modern cars, scan for codes. Clear any lamp-out warnings. Some systems won’t reset until you do.

And if you went LED? Drive it for a few days. Some CANbus systems take 3–5 ignition cycles to relearn. If the hyper flash comes back, you need resistors. No way around it.
