Here’s what most people miss: a restricted evaporator can freeze solid. Ice builds up, breaks loose, and gets carried into the compressor as liquid. Compressors move gas—not liquid. How to Diagnose It (Without Guessing)

Why It Happens (And Where Design Falls Short)

The evaporator isn’t failing. It’s being overwhelmed. The intake under the cowl—right at the base of the windshield—is the entry point. Leaves, pine needles, seed pods, road grit—all get sucked in when the blower runs.

The cabin air filter is supposed to stop it. But I see three big problems:

  • Filter missing (common on older cars or after DIY work)

  • Wrong size or aftermarket filter that doesn’t seal

  • Design flaws—some FCA and GM models have known gaps in the housing

Use a long, flexible retrieval tool—like a dental pick or magnetic pickup—and a vacuum with a crevice tool. Pull debris out. Never push. And for the love of cooling, don’t blast compressed air from inside the cabin—you’ll just pack it deeper. This only works on early-stage clogs and vehicles with decent access (like many Hondas and Toyotas).

Heavy, Packed Debris Professional Only

This is the majority of cases. The gunk is wet, matted, and deep. Cleaning it means pulling the evaporator. That means recovering refrigerant, removing the dash, extracting the HVAC housing, disassembling it, and cleaning the core from the rear with low-pressure air and evaporator-safe solvent. It’s a full-day job. Labor is $800–$1,200 alone. But it works. I’ve saved dozens of cores this way. Key: dry it completely before reassembly. Any moisture left in leads to more mold.

Corroded or Damaged Core Professional Only

If the fins are bent, corroded, or collapsed, cleaning won’t cut it. You need a new evaporator.
